TVEA Spotlight

As always, I am pleased to have the opportunity to update you as we enter the final homestretch of the 2018-19 school year.

Related to Consult and Negotiations, we are looking forward to continuing to make progress with TVUSD on 2019-20 Bargaining this month. TVEA LCAP Committee met with the District on April 25th and had a productive session. On the same day, four members of our Executive Board participated in our 2nd Consult meeting with the Superintendent and staff to further delve into topics such as Adverse Student Behaviors and District Student Assessments.

We conducted our Spring Executive Board Elections in April and our pleased to welcome two new board members: Lauren Davis of Day Middle School will be our new Middle School Representative and Dawn Murray-Sibby of Temecula Valley High School will be the High School Representative. Re-elected for two -year terms were Elementary Representative Karie Shorack of Vintage Hills Elementary and Mike Wassan of Gardner Middle School as Association Treasurer. Finally, Alan Underwood was re-elected to a three-year term as CTA State Council Representative serving on our 12 -member Executive Board.

Organizationally, were very pleased with our participation as a vendor at the recent Taste of Temecula Valley Event two weekends ago in Old Town. We had a booth in which we provided complimentary books and fun size TVEA frisbee discs to families who stopped by. This was a great way to engage informally with the community and reinforce our stated tagline of being Dedicated and Committed Advocates for Teaching and Learning.

Finally, we held our 3rd annual Member Appreciation event last Friday afternoon at Cougar Winery- We figured we would acknowledge the Day of the California Educator a week early!

At this event, we announced our TVEA 2018-19 Association Awards and I would like to share our recipients with the Governing Board and District Officials.

First, in the category of “Super Site Leader” we had five of our site representatives acknowledged for their work:

  • Lauren Davis of Day Middle School

  • Peggy Dixon of Susan Nelson High School

  • Kathleen Hamilton of French Valley Elementary

  • Dana Portis of Chaparral High School

  • Natalie Walton of Barnett Elementary

Our Committee Leader of the year is Kristan Morales of Chaparral High who is our Instruction and Professional Development Committee Chair.

Two new awards we initiated this year are our Advocacy Series Awards with one recipient for each our Dedicated, Committed and Advocate descriptors and the “Proven Leader of Student Success” Award.

For Advocacy:

Dedicated: Anastasia Bortcosh, Jackson Elementary

Committed: Melissa Gibson, Margarita Middle and Temecula Valley High School

Advocate: Chris Jones, Vintage Hills Elementary

Obviously selecting a single leader of “Proven Leader of Student Success” is difficult yet Toby Brannon of Temecula Valley High School is a selection we can make with full confidence. Toby and his students have built and successfully implemented the Biosustainability Greenhouse which started with seed money from a CTA Institute for Teaching Grant.

Our final two members recognized were our CTA We Honor Ours Recipients. These two members were nominated and voted on by the TVEA Executive Board for their exemplary service to the association

Both Belisa Guerrero of Temecula Luiseno and Karie Shorack of Vintage Hills Elementary will receive their formal recognition May 17th at a Regional Event.

TVEA is very proud of both and all other 2018-19 awardees.

Thank you
