TVEA
wants to keep its membership informed
regarding the current budget crisis.
To it, we will be giving regularly
updated information on this website.
Last updated: March 4th
What
We Know:
A
meeting was held at
Margarita
Middle School
in which 348 certificated were invited
Carol
Leighty and Chris Cordner shared the
process and timelines for Reduction In
Force. (see
presentation)
Administrative
changes/reductions will be voted on
this Thursday March 6th.
Dana
Miller and Ed Sibby returned from
Sacramento
with concerns about local legislators
being non-supportive of our schools. (see
story)
All
forms and information regarding
RIF
procedures can be found on this
site
There
will be no mid-year cuts to the
budget this year. This gap was
met by sweeping categorical monies in
order to cover the 07-08 shortfall.
We
have a 10 million dollar shortfall in
our local budget for the 08-09 school
year.
However,
this is a proposed budget, and
as such it is very unlikely the cuts
to public education will be this deep
The
District is required by law to
distribute these before March 15, but
receipt in no way suggests you will
necessarily be laid off next school
year
What
We Don’t Yet Know:
How
many certificated staff will actually
receive
RIF
notices
Whether
the Hearing Officer will grant the
TVUSD the requested exemptions to the
RIF
list
How
much maneuvering will take place in
Sacramento
How
much the pressure on Sacramento has changed the dynamic and convinced
legislators to ensure schools are not
hurt

What
we've been doing:
TVEA
Leaders,
I
just wanted to thank you all again for
your commitment to your local union,
your colleagues, and most importantly,
the children in the
Temecula
Valley
. The smiling faces among the
sea of blue shirts was an awesome
sight, and as many of you will read in
this morning’s paper, made great
press coverage in defense of our local
schools. Only those who
participated were able to experience
the support of our community as horns
were honked and people cheered from
their cars when reading our signage.
We had a great turnout, and I hope
that you will consider one of the two
rallies that will be held next
Wednesday in both
Lake
Elsinore
and
San Bernardino
. There will be thousands of
teachers at the regional meeting in
San Bernardino
, with Jack O'Connell, the
current State Superintendent of Public
Instruction slated to speak.

Riverside
Education Coalition Rally
May
27, 2008
On
Tuesday, May 27, 2008 the Southwest
Riverside Education Coalition hosted a
rally at Cal Oaks Sports Park in
Murrieta.
The coalition is a group of
stake holders concerned about our
public schools. Members of the group
include school board members, school
district administrators, teachers
associations, classified employee
locals, and PTA leadership.
The purpose of the rally was to
bring attention to the ongoing
statewide struggle with public school
funding.
Speakers
for the event included; Kenneth Young-
Riverside County Superintendent of
Schools, Barbara Tooker- California
School Boards Association Director and
TVUSD School Board President, Stan
Scheer-Superintendent of Murrieta
Valley Unified School District, Lloyd
Porter-California Teachers Association
Board Member, Michael Bilbrey-California
School Employees Association Second
Vice President Board of Directors,
Marty Chavez-Teacher Lake Elsinore
Unified School District, Dru
Farrell-Parent Teacher Association
Board Member 23rd District,
Celina Martinez-5th Grader
Foothill Elementary School
Corona/Norco School District, Julian
Sibby- 5th Grader Vail
Elementary School TVUSD.
Brian Wixom-TVEA President
served as Master of Ceremonies.
Each
of the speakers emphasized the need to
continue to pressure Sacramento to
provide needed funds for public
education.
California is the 6th,
7th or 8th
largest economy in the world yet our
per pupil funding ranks 46th
in the United States.
Our schools rank dead last in
the number of teachers per student,
librarians per student and counselors
per student.
While the May revise was a step
in the right direction, it still cut
over $4 billion to schools.
18,000 educators were issued
lay-off notices state wide.
Informing state senators and
assemblymen that their respective
constituents expect them to protect
school funding was a recurring theme.
Our elected officials need to
develop a state budget that protects
the future of our children.
Following
the speakers, rally attendees did a
call-in to the governor, state
legislators, as well as friends,
neighbors and family members across
the state urging them to protect
school funding.
T-shirts, posters, buttons,
stickers, palm cards and talking
points all shared a message that must
continue to reach Sacramento,
“SUPPORT OUR STUDENTS, SAFEGUARD OUR
SCHOOLS, SECURE OUR FUTURE.”
