Governor Schwarzenegger’s initial
budget proposal will require budget
cuts in nearly all areas of the state,
including if ultimately passed,
cutting of hundreds of dollars in
classroom spending for every
California student. Although this is
what has been described as the opening
act of a three act play, (Budget
Proposal, May Revised, Adopted Budget)
these initial projections are very bad
news for the students in
California’s public schools. More
specifically, the Governor has proposed to NOT fund COLA and CUT revenue limit funding by an additional 2.05% for an overall deficit of 6.99% in 2008-2009. These are the opening salvos of a budget battle
that will take place over the next
several months. CTA is working
diligently to avert what might become
one of the worst budget years for
education in recent memory. As
TVEA/CTA members, we should arm
ourselves with the knowledge of these
events so that we may respond
appropriately when it becomes
necessary to do so.
